TERRY’S MOVIE RATINGS
A Note on Terry’s Rating System (for Movies):
Many professional movie critics use a 4 Star Rating System – but Terry is not a professional (he is only an amateur). So Terry is using a 5 Star Rating System (because he finds it WAY EASIER to rate a movie out of five stars than four). Terry is pleased to brag he is using the same rating system as Mick Martin and Marsha Porter’s old movie books!
This is Terry’s actual rating system:
5 stars = A movie SO GOOD, Terry enjoyed it from start to finish (and he had no criticisms).
4.5 stars = A GOOD movie.
4 stars = A GOOD movie.
3.5 stars = A GOOD movie.
3 stars = A MEDIOCRE movie (Terry dislikes these movies – UNLESS it is an Unintentionally Hilarious film).
2.5 stars = A MEDIOCRE movie (Terry dislikes these movies).
2 stars = A SHITTY movie.
1.5 stars = A SHITTY movie.
1 star = A SHITTY movie.
0.5 stars = A SHITTY movie.
0 stars = A movie SO SHITTY, Terry found absolutely nothing to like in it.
A Note on Unintentionally Hilarious Movies:
When Terry says a movie is “Unintentionally Hilarious!”, he doesn’t mean it has one or a few unintentionally hilarious moments. He means the movie must have A SHITLOAD of unintentionally hilarious moments – that frequently occur throughout the film. If Terry sees a movie that he considers unintentionally hilarious – that is a movie he loved watching. HOWEVER, Terry will NOT give an unintentionally hilarious movie a rating higher than 3 stars – because it is an ineptly made film.
Eg: Hands of Steel (1986) (starring Janet Agren) (Unintentionally Hilarious!) (3 stars)
A Note on Movies that were Filmed with a Cast that did not Speak English Onscreen:
Terry ALMOST ALWAYS makes sure every movie he watches is in the language it was originally filmed in. So if it is a film that was filmed with a cast that were NOT speaking English, Terry tries to watch that film in the non-English language the cast were speaking (with the aid of English subtitles). Also, for these non-English Language Movies – Terry USUALLY lists the movie’s title in English, then the title (in brackets) in the film’s original language.
Eg: Abuse of Weakness (aka Abus de faiblesse)
And even though Terry’s 99% sure “Abus de faiblesse” is “Abuse of Weakness” in French, he’s not 100% certain. So for simplicity’s sake, Terry lists it in brackets as “aka Abus de faiblesse”. Terry wishes he knew more than one language – but at the same time, he doesn’t want to actually go through the hassle/work/effort of learning other languages. Oh well.
A Note on Why Some Movies Have the Year They Were Made Listed, and Others Do Not:
If Terry is unable to confirm that a movie he saw was uncut, OR if he thinks he did not see the movie in the screen format it is supposed to be in – he did not list the year for that film.
Eg: About Adam (starring Frances O’Connor) (3 stars)
About Adam was a movie Terry watched years ago on the W Movies Channel – which is a now defunct Canadian TV station, which had commercial breaks during the film. So Terry assumed About Adam had been “edited for time”, but had no way of knowing for sure. Oh well. Also,
Eg: Bigfoot (aka Big Foot) (starring Judith Jordan and Jennifer Bishop) (2.5 stars)
Terry saw the full screen version of Bigfoot – and Terry is 99% sure that is not the screen format it was supposed to be in. But he watched the film anyway, because he was WAY too eager to see the film (and unwilling to wait for a proper widescreen release). Terry puts the blame for that on Mick Martin and Marsha Porter’s hilarious movie review of Big Foot. Oh well.
